Online Slots: RTP, Volatility and Top Games 🎰

Slots are where bonuses get cleared and where the biggest multipliers live: up to 150,000x on one popular title. The catch is the RTP setting, which your casino picks. Here's how to read it, and which games count.

✓ Updated
⚡ The quick take
  • Popular slots run up to 96.0%-96.71% RTP at their top setting
  • ⚠️ Casinos choose the RTP setting: check the in-game info screen
  • Slots count 100% toward most wagering, with exceptions for some studios and jackpots
  • Volatility decides how the RTP is paid: often and small, or rarely and big

How online slots work

An online slot is a random number generator wrapped in reels and artwork. Every spin is decided the moment you press the button, and each spin is independent of the last, so a game is never “due” a win. Two numbers describe what happens over time: RTP, the share of all bets the slot pays back over a very long run, and volatility, how that return is spread between small frequent wins and rare big ones.

At 96% RTP, the average cost of C$1,000 in spins is C$40. That’s the number that matters when you clear a bonus, because wagering requirements make you bet the bonus many times over. Our slot RTP and volatility guide goes deep on both; this page is the quick map.

These are titles Canadian-facing casinos commonly carry. Figures are the studio’s top or default setting; availability depends on each casino’s lobby.

Slot Studio Up to RTP Volatility Max win
Big Bass Bonanza Reel Kingdom (via Pragmatic Play) 96.71% Medium-high 2,100x
Legacy of Dead Play’n GO 96.58% High 5,000x
Gates of Olympus Pragmatic Play 96.50% High 5,000x
Sweet Bonanza Pragmatic Play 96.48% Medium-high 21,100x
Wanted Dead or a Wild Hacksaw Gaming 96.38% High 12,500x
Book of Dead Play’n GO 96.21% High 5,000x
Money Train 4 Relax Gaming 96.10% High 150,000x
Starburst NetEnt 96.09% Low 500x
Fire in the Hole xBomb Nolimit City 96.06% High 60,000x
Wolf Gold Pragmatic Play 96.01% Medium 2,500x
Mega Moolah Games Global 88.12% Medium Progressive

The spread at the top is tight: under one percentage point separates the first ten. Volatility and max win vary far more, and those are what make two 96% slots feel completely different. Mega Moolah’s lower RTP is the price of its progressive jackpot, funded by a slice of every bet.

RTP settings: read the info screen

Here’s what the table can’t show. Many slots ship in several RTP settings, and the casino chooses which one to run. Same reels, same artwork, different maths. Hacksaw Gaming publishes four settings for Wanted Dead or a Wild on its own game page:

🎰 One slot, four RTP settings: Wanted Dead or a Wild

At the top setting, C$1,000 in spins costs about C$36 on average. At the lowest, about C$116. Book of Dead goes lower still, with five settings down to 84.18%, and Play’n GO’s Reactoonz and Legacy of Dead also come in five versions. Before you settle in, tap the info or paytable button and find the RTP line. If it’s below the studio’s top figure, another game may give you more for the same stake.

Volatility, features and jackpots

Volatility is how often and how big a slot pays. Starburst, rated low, has a 22.6% hit frequency and a 500x cap. Money Train 4, rated high, hits on about 20% of spins but caps at 150,000x, so most of its RTP sits in rare, huge bonus rounds. Short sessions on high-volatility games usually return less than the RTP.

Megaways is a mechanic from Big Time Gaming, launched with Bonanza in 2016: six reels showing two to seven symbols each, for up to 117,649 ways to win. Pragmatic Play and other studios license it.

Bonus buys let you pay a fixed price, commonly 100x the stake, to start the bonus round straight away. Buy RTP can differ from base RTP: SlotCatalog lists Fire in the Hole xBomb’s buys at 96.07%, 96.2% or 96.96%, against 96.06% for the base game.

Jackpots are fixed (a set multiple of the stake, like Wolf Gold’s 1,000x Mega) or progressive (a pool that grows with every bet, often across many casinos). Mega Moolah’s record payout was €18,915,872.81 in September 2018.

Slots and bonus wagering

Slots are the default way to clear a bonus because they usually count 100%. The exceptions sit in each casino’s terms. We read four Canadian-facing casinos’ tables:

Slot type Jackpot City Grizzly’s Quest Casino Classic V.Vegas
Most slots 100% 100% 100% 100%
NetEnt slots 50% 50% 100% 100%
Re-spin slots 10% 10% Not listed Not listed
Progressive jackpots 0% 0% Not listed Not listed
Big Bass Hold & Spinner Not listed Not listed Not listed 15%

So at Jackpot City or Grizzly’s Quest, Starburst clears half as fast as a Pragmatic slot, and jackpot spins clear nothing. At V.Vegas, one specific Big Bass title is the trap. The chart shows the total slot bets needed to clear each welcome bonus we track, on a C$100 deposit.

The studios behind the reels

A handful of studios make most of the slots in Canadian-facing lobbies, and several publish RTP and volatility on their own pages:

  • Pragmatic Play: Sweet Bonanza, Gates of Olympus, Wolf Gold, Sugar Rush; Gibraltar HQ, certified in 30+ jurisdictions.
  • Play’n GO: Book of Dead, Reactoonz, Legacy of Dead; 400+ titles, licensed in the UK, Malta and Gibraltar.
  • Hacksaw Gaming: Wanted Dead or a Wild; founded 2018, Malta-based.
  • Nolimit City: Fire in the Hole xBomb; Malta-based, owned by Evolution since 2022.
  • Relax Gaming: the Money Train series; Malta-based, founded 2010.
  • BGaming: fiat and crypto slots with provably fair maths; Malta-licensed, founded 2018.
  • NetEnt and Big Time Gaming: Starburst, Gonzo’s Quest and the original Megaways, both now part of Evolution.

Where to play them

Library size varies a lot across our list, from curated catalogues to some of the biggest lobbies around. MagicianBet runs the largest library we’ve lined up, and Spinjo works with more studios than any other casino on our list. Each review lists the library and the weighting rules.

For spins to try these games with, compare free spins bonuses, the matched balances on welcome bonuses, or sign-up drops on no deposit bonuses. Run any offer through the wagering calculator with the RTP of the slot you plan to play, and read the wagering requirements guide for the full formula. Prefer cards and wheels? FAQ

What is a good RTP for an online slot?

Among popular titles, published top settings sit between about 96.0% and 96.71%. Treat anything in that band as standard. Progressive jackpot slots run lower, such as Mega Moolah at 88.12%. Always check the info screen, since your casino may run a lower setting.

How do I check a slot's RTP at my casino?

Open the slot, then tap the info, help or paytable button. The game rules list the theoretical return to player for the version that casino runs. If it's below the studio's published top setting, the casino has picked a lower one.

Do slots count toward bonus wagering?

Usually 100%, which is why slots are the standard way to clear a bonus. Exceptions in the terms we read: NetEnt slots at 50% and re-spin slots at 10% at Jackpot City and Grizzly's Quest, progressive jackpots at 0%, and one named Big Bass title at 15% at V.Vegas.

Can I use bonus buys while wagering a bonus?

Check the terms first. Offshore casinos commonly forbid bonus buys while a bonus is active, and V.Vegas counts a bonus-buy purchase as one spin under its max bet. A buy usually costs about 100x the stake, so it can break a max-bet rule instantly.

Are slot winnings taxed in Canada?

For recreational players, gambling winnings are generally not taxable in Canada; interest earned on them is. This is general information, not tax advice.
