Football Betting in Canada: NFL and CFL

Football is two sports for Canadian bettors. The NFL is the biggest betting event on the calendar and has no Canadian team; the CFL is ours, with nine teams, its own rulebook and a set of rule changes that make older betting data less reliable. We read the CFL’s own rule announcements, pulled the 2026 schedules from both leagues and worked through how football lines settle, so you can see what each change means for a bet.

🍁 Two leagues, one Canadian

The CFL’s 2026 season opened on Thursday, June 4, with Montreal at Hamilton, per the league’s schedule release. Nine teams play: BC, Calgary, Edmonton, Hamilton, Montreal, Ottawa, Saskatchewan, Toronto and Winnipeg. The regular season ended on Saturday, October 24, and the playoffs follow fast: Division Semi-Finals on October 31, Division Finals on November 7.

The 113th Grey Cup is on Sunday, November 15, 2026, at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, 6 p.m. ET, according to the CFL’s host announcement. It’s Calgary’s sixth time hosting, after 1975, 1993, 2000, 2009 and 2019. Calgary is in Alberta, which runs its own regulated market and sits outside what this site covers; we list the date as a fact.

The NFL’s 2026 season kicked off on Wednesday, September 9, with defending champion Seattle hosting New England, per NFL.com. It runs 18 weeks and 272 games, and Super Bowl LXI is on February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

What changes for CFL bettors

The CFL is rebuilding its game in two phases, and both touch betting markets.

2026 phase, announced September 22, 2025: the rouge no longer scores a single point when a missed field goal goes wide of the goalposts. The play clock is an automatic 35 seconds, and the benches sit on opposite sides of the field.

Ties are gone. Approved on May 12, 2026: if a regular-season game is still level after a second overtime mini-game, teams alternate two-point converts from the 3-yard line until one wins. Each team gets one 15-second timeout in overtime, and the 20-second play clock stays for the final three minutes of each half.

2027 phase: the field shrinks from 110 to 100 yards, end zones from 20 to 15 yards, and the goalposts move to the back of the end zone. The width stays 65 yards.

What that means for a bet is our inference, so treat it as one. Fewer cheap single points pull a little scoring out of games, and the end of regular-season ties removes the draw from three-way markets. How football lines settle

Both leagues use the same core markets. The spread gives one team a points handicap, the total is the combined score, and the moneyline is the straight winner. Our explainer on moneylines, spreads and totals covers them across sports. The detail that trips people up is the push.

A whole-number line gives you a third outcome: your stake back. A half-point line removes it, and the price usually shifts to reflect that. Inside a parlay, a pushed leg usually drops out and the parlay pays on the remaining legs, but rules vary, so check the book’s terms. 🧮 What football costs to bet

A standard two-way spread priced at -110 on both sides carries a 4.55% margin: each side implies 52.38%, the two add up to 104.76%, and 1/1.0476 is a 95.45% payout. That’s the baseline. Here’s what books actually kept on football compared with other sports.

Football held 7.29% over 12 months, well above the 4.55% margin on a single -110 line. The gap comes from what people bet: parlays, props and futures carry more margin than a straight spread. Props, futures and parlays

Football is the home of the big parlay slip and the same-game parlay. The maths is straight: each leg multiplies the odds and the margin compounds. A four-leg parlay of -110 coin-flips hits 6.25% of the time and carries about 17% built-in edge, computed from the -110 margin. Same-game parlays are repriced by each book because legs in one game are linked, so the simple formula doesn’t apply. Futures tie your stake up for months: Grey Cup winner from June to November, Super Bowl winner from September to February. In an illustrative four-runner futures market the margin is about 8.36%, almost double a -110 spread. Player props (passing yards, touchdowns, receptions) are covered in our props and futures guide.

Live betting is the other football habit worth a plain look. Every snap resets the price, and the stop-start rhythm of a football game leaves a gap for a new bet between nearly every play. A scoping study by Killick and Griffiths found in-play betting “has the potential to be more harmful” than other forms because of its fast, continuous bet opportunities; the authors say the evidence isn’t definitive yet. Sunday slates and Thursday-to-Monday NFL weeks make it easy to bet every day. Set a weekly budget before kickoff, keep parlays small, and treat adding bets to win back a bad Sunday as a warning sign.
