Basketball Betting in Canada: NBA and Raptors

Basketball is the high-volume sport of the betting year: a full slate most nights from late October to April, a total on every game and dozens of player props underneath. It’s also, on regulator numbers, the major sport where books keep the least. We pulled the 2026-27 dates from the NBA’s own schedule pages and lined up what Nevada’s books held by sport, so you can see where the cost of an NBA bet actually sits.

🍁 The Raptors and the 2026-27 season

The Toronto Raptors are Canada’s only NBA team. The league’s key dates page sets the frame for the season.

How basketball markets settle

Three markets carry most of the action.

Point spread. One team gets a points handicap. Basketball spreads are wider than football’s because scoring is higher, but the mechanics are the same: a whole-number line can push, a half-point line can’t.

Total. The combined score of both teams against a line, usually somewhere above 200 points in the NBA. Half-point totals settle cleanly.

Moneyline. The straight winner. Heavy favourites carry short odds; at 1.25 (-400) the implied probability is 80%, so you risk C$100 to make C$25 profit.

Quarter and half markets settle on that part of the game only. Whether a full-game market includes overtime is set by each book’s rules; most full-game markets do, but read the label. 🧮 What books keep on basketball

A two-way spread priced at -110 on both sides carries a 4.55% margin: each side implies 52.38%, the pair adds up to 104.76%, and the payout is 95.45%. That’s the starting point on any NBA line. What books actually kept is higher, because people don’t only bet straight spreads.

Basketball held 6.78%, the lowest of the four major sports and below the 7.69% all-sports figure. Low hold doesn’t make a bet a good one; it means less of the money wagered stayed with the books over that year. For the full method, see our bookmaker margin guide. Props, parlays and same-game parlays

Basketball has more player props than any other sport: points, rebounds, assists, threes and combinations of them. Props are priced by each book, and no credible public table of prop margins exists, so compare the two sides of a prop and add the implied probabilities. Anything well above 100% is margin you pay. Same-game parlays are a step further: a player’s points and his team’s total are linked, so books reprice the combination with their own adjustments, and the simple formula above doesn’t apply. Live NBA betting

Basketball is built for in-play betting: runs of ten points in two minutes, timeouts every few possessions, a fresh price after each one. That speed is the risk. A scoping study by Killick and Griffiths found in-play betting “has the potential to be more harmful” than other forms because of its fast, continuous bet opportunities, though the authors say the evidence isn’t yet definitive. 🧮 Free bets on an NBA night

Sports welcome offers often arrive as free bets, and basketball is where many people use them. The catch with most free bets is that the stake isn’t returned with a win: a C$10 free bet at 2.00 pays C$10 profit, not C$20. That changes which odds make sense. Using a market with a 95.45% payout, the expected value of the free bet works out like this.

Placing a free bet on a heavy NBA favourite throws away most of its value; a pick at even money keeps under half. Longer odds keep more on paper, but they also lose more often, so the free bet is still a bet that most often returns nothing at long odds.
