CFL Betting: New Rules, New Numbers

✓ Updated

The CFL is the one major league that’s entirely Canadian, and in 2026 it started rewriting its own rulebook. The single point for a missed field goal that sails wide is gone. Regular-season ties are gone. Next season the field itself gets shorter. For bettors, every one of those changes touches the numbers: totals, margins of victory and the three-way markets all behave differently than they did two years ago. Here’s what changed, what it means for each bet type, and how pushes work on the whole-number lines the CFL often uses.

⚡ The quick take
  • 2026: no rouge on a missed field goal wide of the posts; no regular-season ties.
  • 2027: 100-yard field, 15-yard end zones, goalposts at the back.
  • Whole-number spreads and totals can push; half-point lines can't.
  • Grey Cup 2026: Sunday, November 15, McMahon Stadium, Calgary.

The rule changes, in order

The CFL announced a two-phase modernization on September 22, 2025, and its Board of Governors approved further changes on May 12, 2026. From the league’s own releases:

When Change Source
2026 The rouge no longer scores a single point for a missed field goal that goes wide of the goalposts CFL, Sept 22, 2025
2026 Benches on opposite sides of the field; automatic 35-second play clock Same release
2026 No regular-season ties: after a second overtime mini-game, teams alternate two-point converts from the 3-yard line until one wins CFL, May 12, 2026
2026 One 15-second timeout per team in overtime; the 20-second play clock stays for the final three minutes of each half Same release
2027 Field from 110 to 100 yards, end zones from 20 to 15 yards, goalposts moved to the back of the end zone; width stays 65 yards CFL, Sept 22, 2025

Reading a CFL line

A CFL game usually shows three main markets side by side. Here’s an illustrative board for one game, with what each price means:

  • Moneyline: favourite 1.40, underdog 3.00. Implied probabilities 71.43% and 33.33%, which add to 104.76%. The book’s margin is about 4.55%.
  • Spread: favourite -6.5 at 1.909, underdog +6.5 at 1.909. The favourite has to win by 7 or more; the underdog covers by losing by 6 or fewer, or by winning.
  • Total: 49.5 points, over and under both at 1.909. Fifty points or more wins the over.

Computed by us; prices illustrative. A C$10 bet on the underdog moneyline returns C$30 if it wins (C$20 profit). The same C$10 on the favourite returns C$14.

Decimal odds are what provincial sites display, and the odds guide covers American and fractional formats too. If a book shows -110 rather than 1.909, the odds converter translates it.

What it means for each bet type

The CFL didn’t change the rules with bettors in mind, but bettors feel them. What follows is our reading of the rules, not a published study, so treat it as reasoning rather than data.

Totals. The rouge used to hand out single points on missed field goals that went wide. Removing those points nudges totals down at the margin and makes some odd final scores less likely. The 2027 field change, with goalposts at the back of a shorter end zone, will move scoring again, in ways nobody has a season of data on yet.

Spreads and margins. Fewer single points means fewer games decided by a lone point from a miss. Any model or rule of thumb built on older CFL margins needs a second look.

Moneyline. Because regular-season games can no longer end level, a moneyline that includes overtime now always settles on a winner in the regular season. Under the old rules a tie was a possible result, and how a book settled it depended on its terms.

Three-way (regulation) markets. A market settled at the end of regulation can still land on a draw, because tied games now go to overtime rather than disappearing. Read the market label: “regulation”, “60 minutes” or “three-way” means overtime doesn’t count.

Our moneyline, spread and totals guide explains each market from scratch, and the props and futures guide covers season-long markets.

🧮 How pushes work on whole numbers

Football lines are often whole numbers, and a whole number can land exactly. When it does, the bet pushes: the stake comes back, with no win and no loss. Half-point lines (-3.5, 49.5) can’t push.

Worked example, illustrative: C$20 on the favourite at decimal 1.909 (-110), on two different lines.

Favourite wins by… Bet at -3 Bet at -3.5
4 or more Wins: C$38.18 returned Wins: C$38.18 returned
Exactly 3 Push: C$20 returned Loses: C$0
1 or 2 Loses: C$0 Loses: C$0
Loses the game Loses: C$0 Loses: C$0

Computed by us: return = stake x decimal odds.

The same logic applies to totals. A total of 50 with a final score of 27-23 is a push; a total of 50.5 isn’t. Books usually price the half-point version a little differently, and the gap between those prices is what that extra half-point costs.

Worked example, illustrative: a book offers the favourite at -3 for -110, or at -2.5 for -125. At -110 you need to win 52.38% of such bets to break even. At -125 the break-even rises to 55.56% (125 / 225). Paying for the half-point only makes sense if the favourite wins by exactly 3 often enough to cover that 3.18-point jump, and in a league whose scoring rules just changed, nobody has clean data on how often that is. The odds converter shows the implied probability of each price so you can compare.

In parlays, a pushed leg usually drops out and the parlay pays on the remaining legs. That’s common practice, not a universal rule, so check the book’s parlay terms before relying on it. The parlay calculator shows how the payout changes when a leg drops out.

The 2026 season and the Grey Cup

The CFL has nine teams: BC, Calgary, Edmonton, Hamilton, Montreal, Ottawa, Saskatchewan, Toronto and Winnipeg. The 2026 season opened on June 4 with Montreal at Hamilton, and the regular season wraps up on October 24.

9 CFL teams, all in Canada CFL
Oct 31 Division Semi-Finals CFL
Nov 7 Division Finals CFL
Nov 15 113th Grey Cup, McMahon Stadium, Calgary CFL

The 113th Grey Cup kicks off at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, November 15, 2026, at McMahon Stadium. It’s Calgary’s sixth time hosting, after 1975, 1993, 2000, 2009 and 2019. Calgary is in Alberta, which runs its own regulated online market; our betting pages cover players outside Ontario and Alberta.

Before the playoffs, check how your book settles playoff markets, especially three-way lines, rather than assuming the regular-season rules carry over.

Futures and the long view

Season-long markets such as the league champion tie up money for months and carry more margin than single games. In an illustrative four-team futures market priced at 3.00, 3.50, 4.00 and 4.50, the implied probabilities add up to 109.13%, a margin of about 8.36%. Compare that with about 4.55% on a -110 two-way line. Our bookmaker margin guide shows the method for any market.

Older CFL data also carries less weight in 2026 and 2027 than it used to, for the reasons above. Bettors who lean on past totals and margins will be working with a rulebook that no longer exists. That’s a reason to keep stakes small while the new numbers settle, and our bankroll guide shows how to size them.

🍁 Where to bet CFL games

Our football betting page covers both the CFL and the NFL, and the NFL betting guide explains how American football lines compare. The betting sites list ranks sportsbooks for players aged 19 or over outside Ontario and Alberta, and current welcome offers sit on the sports bonus page. In British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, PlayNow is the provincial option; in Quebec, it’s Mise-o-jeu from Loto-Quebec.

The provincial products differ. Western Canada Lottery’s Sport Select, sold through retailers, lists Pro-Line, point spread, over/under, props, futures and pools, with a “single games” filter, wagers from C$2 to C$100 and a C$250,000 prize limit, per its own site. Quebec’s Mise-o-jeu offers single bets and combinations in decimal odds, and its page shows no in-play section. PlayNow Sports in B.C. runs a live betting menu.

Set a deposit limit before the playoffs start, and keep the responsible gambling page handy for every provincial helpline.

FAQ

What CFL rules changed in 2026?

From 2026, a missed field goal that goes wide of the goalposts no longer scores a single point (the rouge), benches sit on opposite sides, and the play clock is an automatic 35 seconds. Regular-season games can no longer end in a tie: after a second overtime mini-game, teams alternate two-point converts from the 3-yard line until one wins.

What changes in the CFL in 2027?

The field shrinks from 110 to 100 yards, end zones go from 20 to 15 yards, and the goalposts move to the back of the end zone. The field stays 65 yards wide. The CFL announced the two-phase plan on September 22, 2025.

What happens to a CFL spread bet if the team wins by exactly the spread?

On a whole-number line, the bet pushes and your stake is returned. Back a team at -3 and it wins by exactly 3: you get your stake back, no win and no loss. A half-point line such as -3.5 can't push; the team either covers or doesn't.

When and where is the 2026 Grey Cup?

The 113th Grey Cup is on Sunday, November 15, 2026, at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, kicking off at 6 p.m. ET. It's Calgary's sixth time hosting. The Division Semi-Finals are on October 31 and the Division Finals on November 7.

Does older CFL data still help with totals?

Less than it used to, in our reading. The 2026 rouge change removes some single points, overtime now always produces a regular-season winner, and the 2027 field is shorter. Each change shifts how games score, so treat totals and margins from earlier seasons with caution.
