⚡ The quick take
Match winner is two-way; there is no draw in tennis
Retirements settle by each book's own rule, so read it first
Short favourites stacked in parlays compound the margin
National Bank Open 2027: July 31 to August 12, Montreal and Toronto
Tennis gives bettors something rare: a sport with no draw and a result in every match. Two players, two prices, one winner. It’s also a sport full of heavy favourites, long tournaments and matches that sometimes end early through injury. We read how tennis markets are built and settled, and pulled the Canadian tournament facts from official sources, so the clean look doesn’t hide the details that cost money.
Match winner: the two-way market
The basic bet is the match winner. With no draw, the two implied probabilities should add up to 100%; whatever they add up to above that is the book’s margin. On a standard line, the maths looks like this:
Line
Decimal odds
Implied probability
Overround
Margin
-110 / -110 (even match)
1.909 / 1.909
52.38% + 52.38%
104.76%
4.55%
-400 / +275 (illustrative heavy favourite)
1.25 / 3.75
80.00% + 26.67%
106.67%
6.25%
Computed: margin = 1 - 1/overround. The second row uses illustrative odds. Lines with a big favourite can hide a bigger margin than an even-looking match, because the edge gets loaded onto the underdog’s price. Our bookmaker margin guide shows the method; the odds converter turns any American price into decimal and implied probability.
🧮 Set, game and total lines
Tennis scoring gives books a lot to price beyond the winner:
Set betting: the exact score in sets, such as 2-0 or 2-1 in a best-of-three match. Several outcomes, so longer prices and more room for margin.
Game handicap: the favourite gives up games, for example -4.5. A 6-3, 6-2 win is 12 games to 5, a margin of 7, so -4.5 wins. Half-game lines cannot push; whole-game lines can refund on an exact margin.
Set handicap: -1.5 sets means winning in straight sets in a best-of-three match.
Total games: over or under a games line for the whole match. Check how the book counts a tiebreak before you bet a close line.
First set winner and player to win a set: shorter markets that settle early.
These work like the spread and totals in other sports; our moneyline, spread and totals guide explains the shared logic, including how pushes work on whole numbers.
Retirements and walkovers
This is the rule that catches tennis bettors most. A player can retire injured mid-match, or withdraw before it starts (a walkover). Books settle these cases differently. Common approaches include:
voiding match winner bets if the match isn’t completed,
standing the bet once a set (or the first ball) has been played, with the player who advances as the winner,
standing any market already decided at the moment of retirement, such as the first set winner.
We haven’t found one rule that every book uses, so the only safe step is to read the tennis section of the book’s rules before you bet, and again before you build a parlay with tennis legs. A retirement inside a parlay can void the leg or lose it, depending on the book. If the leg is voided, a parlay usually pays on the remaining legs at lower combined odds; if it is settled as a loss, the whole ticket goes. That difference is worth knowing before you add a player with a known injury to a ticket.
The same goes for walkovers announced after you bet. A player withdrawing before the first ball is usually a void at most books, but “usually” isn’t a rule. The book’s terms are the only answer that counts.
🍁 The National Bank Open
Canada’s big tennis week is the National Bank Open, an ATP 1000 and WTA 1000 event split between Montreal and Toronto. The 2026 edition ran August 1-13.

The men played at IGA Stadium in Montreal and the women at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, according to the tournament’s 2026 review. Shelton was a repeat champion. For bettors, a two-week tournament means two kinds of markets: match lines day by day, and an outright on the tournament winner. Outrights have many runners, and markets with more outcomes usually carry more margin: an illustrative four-runner market priced at 3.00, 3.50, 4.00 and 4.50 already has an overround of 109.13% and a margin of about 8.36%. A full tennis draw has far more names than that. Our props and futures guide explains how outrights are priced and why your stake sits locked until the final.
Short favourites and parlays
Tennis produces a lot of short prices, with top seeds in early rounds often priced well under 1.50. Stacking several into one parlay feels safe because each leg looks likely. The maths says otherwise: each leg adds its own margin, and the edges multiply.

Our parlay guide shows the hit-rate maths in full. Plug your own legs into the parlay calculator to see the combined odds and how the implied probability shrinks.
Short prices also matter for bonuses. A free bet where the stake is not returned keeps only part of its face value, and less on short odds: computed on a market paying back 95.45%, a C$10 free bet used at 1.50 is worth about C$3.18 on average, while the same free bet at 3.00 is worth about C$6.36. Our free bets guide walks through the formula, and the sports bonuses explainer covers minimum odds on rollover.
Cash out during a match
Many books offer a cash-out price on a tennis bet in progress. Here is how a fair price works, computed with illustrative odds: you bet C$20 on a player at 3.00, so the potential return is C$60. After the player wins the first set, their live price drops to 1.40. A fair cash-out value is the potential return divided by the current odds: C$60 / 1.40 = C$42.86. If the book offers C$40, the C$2.86 gap is extra margin it keeps. Cash-out offers are set by the book, and no published Canadian rule fixes the formula. Our live betting and cash out guide covers the maths in more depth.
Live tennis
In-play tennis prices can move on every point, break and tiebreak. That pace is the risk. Killick and Griffiths’ review found in-play betting “has the potential to be more harmful” than other forms because of its fast, continuous bet opportunities. If you bet live, set a stake and a number of bets before the first serve.
Where to bet tennis
The offer cards above list sportsbooks with tennis markets for players outside Ontario and Alberta, aged 19+. Coverage varies a lot below the main tours, so check that the book lists the events you follow. The betting sites list ranks every book we cover, current welcome deals sit on the sports bonuses page, and the betting hub brings it all together. Books licensed outside Canada are not covered by provincial self-exclusion. Other sports: golf, soccer and MMA and boxing.
Betting tennis responsibly
Tennis runs almost year-round, across time zones, with matches overnight. The Lower-Risk Gambling Guidelines suggest gambling no more than 1% of household income a month, no more than 4 days a month, and no more than 2 types of games. Our bankroll guide turns that into units and limits. The responsible gambling page lists every provincial helpline; in Manitoba, the Problem Gambling Helpline is open 24 hours at 1-800-463-1554.
What happens to my tennis bet if a player retires injured?
It depends on the book. Some void the match winner bet if a player retires before the match ends, some settle it once a set is complete, and some pay whoever advances. Markets already decided, such as the first set winner, often stand. Read the tennis rules before you bet.
Is there a draw in tennis betting?
No. Every tennis match produces a winner, so the match winner market has two outcomes. That makes the margin easy to check: convert both prices to implied probabilities and add them. Anything above 100% is the book's edge.
When is the next National Bank Open?
July 31 to August 12, 2027. The tournament is split between Montreal and Toronto. In 2026, Ben Shelton won the men's ATP 1000 title in Montreal and Iga Swiatek won the women's WTA 1000 title in Toronto.
What is a game handicap bet in tennis?
The favourite gives up a number of games, for example -4.5. If the favourite wins 6-3, 6-2, they won 12 games to 5, a margin of 7, so -4.5 wins. Half-game lines cannot push. It's the tennis version of a point spread.
Who can use the sportsbooks on this page?
Players aged 19+ who live outside Ontario and Alberta. Both of those provinces run their own regulated markets. In British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, PlayNow is the provincial option; in Quebec, Mise-o-jeu.
