Soccer is the only major sport where the draw is a normal result, and that one fact shapes every market. The classic bet, 1X2, makes you pick between three outcomes. The Asian handicap removes the draw with a head start and splits your stake on the in-between results. Draw no bet sits halfway. Each one prices the same match differently, and research on more than 84,000 matches says the choice changes how much the book keeps. This guide explains all three, works through quarter lines with C$ examples, and lines up the Canadian soccer calendar from MLS to the Canadian Premier League.
- 1X2 = home, draw, away. Example margin from a published study: 4.93%.
- Asian handicap carries lower margins than 1X2 on the evidence we read.
- Quarter lines split your stake; a -0.25 draw loses half, refunds half.
- MLS Cup: December 18. CPL Final: November 21-22.
1X2: the three-way result
A 1X2 bet picks the match result: 1 for a home win, X for a draw, 2 for an away win. With three outcomes, the book has to price all of them, and the margin sits across the three.
Here’s how it adds up, using example odds from Karl Hegarty and Karl Whelan’s published study of soccer betting markets:
| Outcome | Decimal odds | Implied probability |
|---|---|---|
| Home win (1) | 1.90 | 52.63% |
| Draw (X) | 4.76 | 21.01% |
| Away win (2) | 3.17 | 31.55% |
| Total (overround) | 105.19% |
Computed by us from the study’s example odds. Margin = 1 - 1/1.0519 = about 4.93%.
A C$10 bet on the home side at 1.90 returns C$19 (C$9 profit). The draw at 4.76 returns C$47.60. The odds converter turns any of these into American or fractional formats, and the bookmaker margin guide shows the method for every market type.
Regular time. Check whether a soccer market includes extra time. The 2026 World Cup final went to extra time, Spain beating Argentina 1-0 after it, which means regular time ended 0-0. A market settled on regular time and one settled on the final result would have paid different bets on the same night.
Why the market you pick matters
Hegarty and Whelan studied 84,230 European matches from 2011 to 2022, covering 252,690 1X2 bets, and compared them with Asian handicap prices on the same games. Two findings matter for anyone betting soccer:
- Asian handicap bets had lower margins than 1X2 bets.
- 1X2 showed a pronounced favourite-longshot bias: bets on longshots lost more per dollar than bets on favourites. Asian handicap didn’t show that bias.
In plain terms: if you like a team, backing it on the Asian handicap usually costs less than backing it on 1X2, and backing big outsiders on 1X2 is the most expensive habit in the market. The study gives direction rather than a per-market margin number, so treat it as a rule of thumb, not a quote. It also doesn’t mean the Asian handicap is a better bet in itself; it means the same opinion on a match usually costs less to express there.
🧮 Asian handicap, line by line
The Asian handicap gives one team a goal head start, or a deficit, and removes the draw. Whole lines can refund the stake on an exact result. Quarter lines split your stake in half across the two nearest lines. Here’s how a C$20 bet on the favourite settles at five common lines, at decimal 1.95 for every line to keep the example simple:
| Line on your team | Win by 2+ | Win by 1 | Draw | Lose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 (same as draw no bet) | C$39.00 | C$39.00 | C$20 refunded | C$0 |
| -0.25 (half 0, half -0.5) | C$39.00 | C$39.00 | C$10 back (half refunded, half lost) | C$0 |
| -0.5 | C$39.00 | C$39.00 | C$0 | C$0 |
| -0.75 (half -0.5, half -1) | C$39.00 | C$29.50 (half wins, half refunded) | C$0 | C$0 |
| -1 | C$39.00 | C$20 refunded | C$0 | C$0 |
Computed by us; return = stake x 1.95 on the winning half or whole. Real books price each line differently.
Read the -0.75 row closely, because it’s the one that confuses people. Half your stake (C$10) is on -0.5, which wins on any victory: C$19.50 back. The other half is on -1, which refunds on a one-goal win: C$10 back. Total C$29.50.
On the underdog side, the lines flip: +0.25 wins half and refunds half on a draw, +0.5 wins on a draw or a win, and +1 refunds on a one-goal defeat. The moneyline, spread and totals guide covers the handicap idea in other sports, where it’s called the spread, the puck line or the run line.
Draw no bet
Draw no bet is the simplest way out of the draw: pick a team, and if the match is level, you get your stake back. It’s the same bet as an Asian handicap line of 0. You pay for the insurance in the price, and you can work out roughly what that price should be from the 1X2 odds: draw no bet = win odds x (1 - 1 / draw odds).
Worked example, using the study’s odds above: 1.90 x (1 - 1/4.76) = 1.90 x 0.790 = about 1.50. That’s the price you’d build yourself by splitting a stake between the home win and the draw so that a draw returns exactly your stake. If a book offers draw no bet well below 1.50 on that match, the insurance costs more there than building it yourself. The more likely the draw, the lower the draw no bet price falls.
When is it worth it? When you think a team is unlikely to lose but the draw is a real risk, such as a strong side away from home. When it isn’t: on heavy favourites, where the draw is rare and the price barely moves.
Totals, both teams to score and props
On a soccer total of 2.5 goals, three or more wins the over. Asian totals use the same quarter-line idea as the handicap: over 2.25 splits your stake between over 2 (refunded on exactly two goals) and over 2.5. “Both teams to score” is a yes/no bet on each side finding the net. Player props cover goalscorers and shots.
Each is a separate market with its own margin. Add up the implied probabilities on both sides before you bet; our props and futures guide covers how player lines work.
🍁 The Canadian soccer calendar
MLS has 30 clubs, three of them Canadian. Decision Day is Saturday, November 7; the top nine in each conference qualify for the playoffs. The Wild Card round is on November 18, Round One (best of three) runs November 20 to December 2, the Conference Semifinals are December 5-6, the Conference Finals December 11-12, and MLS Cup is on Friday, December 18, per the league’s schedule. A best-of-three series raises its own settlement question: check whether a market is on a single match or the series.
The Canadian Premier League runs eight clubs in 2026: Pacific FC, Vancouver FC, Cavalry FC, Forge FC, Inter Toronto FC, Atletico Ottawa, HFX Wanderers and the expansion side FC Supra du Quebec. The 112-game regular season ended on October 25, with the Final on the weekend of November 21-22. Check how many markets a book actually offers on CPL games, and compare prices between books, before counting on more than the main lines.
Canada at the 2026 World Cup set a men’s record. As co-host, Canada opened with a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, beat Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver for its first-ever men’s World Cup win, lost 2-1 to Switzerland, finished second in Group B, beat South Africa 1-0 for its first knockout win, and went out 3-0 to Morocco in the Round of 16 on July 4.

FAQ
What does 1X2 mean in soccer betting?
It's the three-way match result: 1 is a home win, X is a draw, 2 is an away win. Because the draw is a real outcome, each side pays more than in a two-way market. In the example odds from a published study, 1.90 / 4.76 / 3.17, the three implied probabilities add to 105.19%, a margin of about 4.93%.
What is an Asian handicap?
A handicap line that removes the draw. A 0 line refunds your stake on a draw, -0.5 means your team must win, and -1 refunds on a one-goal win. Quarter lines such as -0.25 split the stake across the two nearest lines, so a draw on -0.25 loses half and refunds half.
Is Asian handicap cheaper than 1X2?
On the evidence we read, yes. Hegarty and Whelan's study of 84,230 European matches from 2011 to 2022 found Asian handicap bets have lower margins than 1X2 bets, and that 1X2 shows a pronounced favourite-longshot bias, where longshots lose more per dollar staked. Asian handicap didn't show that bias.
What is draw no bet?
A bet on one team where a draw returns your stake. It works the same way as an Asian handicap line of 0. You give up some price compared with the 1X2 win, in exchange for not losing on a draw.
When are the MLS Cup and the CPL Final in 2026?
MLS Cup is on Friday, December 18, 2026, after Decision Day on November 7 and playoffs from November 18. The Canadian Premier League Final is set for the weekend of November 21-22, after a regular season that ended on October 25.
